Proper Ducati Engine Oil Check / Change Procedures
Please ensure the following procedures are followed during PDI and any / all service
work.
Checking the engine oil level on all Ducati engines:
• Oil level should be verified when the engine is cold.
• Oil level sight glass is located on the right-hand engine case.
• The bike should not be on the side stand.
• The bike should be perpendicular to the ground.
• Oil level should be in the center of the window.
Changing the engine oil and filter:
• Engine temperature should be above 180 degrees F.
(Road testing motorcycle before draining engine oil works best)
• Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
• Remove the oil pick-up strainer and clean the screen as necessary and reinstall
strainer and cap with new washer, using 42 Nm of torque for both
screen and cap. *Deep sump motors have a different type screen.
• Replace the sump drain plug with a new crush washer using 42 Nm of
torque.
• Fill the oil filter, with new oil, until it is half full; never fill the filter to the top.
(Filling the oil filter to the top will cause hydraulic lock. The warning light will
illuminate due to the insufficient oil pressure caused by the hydraulic lock).
• Lubricate the filter seal with used oil; this prevents the seal sticking to the
engine case.
• Pour 3 quarts of oil into the sump filler, located on the right-hand engine
case.
• Run the engine for 60 seconds then turn off the engine and wait five
minutes.
• The oil level should now be in the center of the sight glass on the right-hand
engine case.
• If the oil level is too low in the sight glass, add oil until the level is in the
center of the window. (Please advise your customers to check the oil level
every 600 miles and fill as needed in order to maintain the oil level between
the low and high marks on the glass window. Please instruct them not to
overfill)
Required engine oil:
All Ducati motorcycles require full synthetic oil
• Dry clutch models require 15W50 or 20W50.
• Wet clutch models require 10W30,10W40 or 10W50
*New units can use as much as 1 (one) quart of oil in the first 600 miles during
break-in. Be sure to check on a regular basis to prevent oil starvation.
